THE GREAT TEMPLE OF THE GREATEST PHARAOH - RAMSES II. ABU SIMBEL EGYPT

Let's explore one of the most astonishing Egyptian temples - the Great Temple of Abu Simbel. Located 20 km from the Sudanese border, the complex of Abu Simbel marked the frontier - the boundary between the great Egyptian empire and its borderland enemies. Both temples of Abu Simbel (the Great Temple, and the Small Temple known as the temple of Nefertari) were commissioned by one of the most famous and powerful pharaohs - Ramesses II (Ramses II).


Officially the Great Temple was dedicated to Re-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, Ptah, and Ramasses II, but the facade of the Great Temple in Abu Simbel may suggest that, in fact, the pharaoh was supposed to be the most important figure here. This was actually nothing new as Ramesses the Great used to appropriate or build multiple religious structures in all of Egypt as part of his propaganda project showing his achievements, great deeds, and military victories. One of Ramesses II’s most well-known battles was the battle of Kadesh against the mighty Hittite Empire (today Turkey), to which the entire wall of the Great Temple was dedicated.
