Chaplain (Maj.) Sarah Schechter became the first female rabbi to serve as a chaplain in the USAF in 2003. Born and raised in Greenwich Village, New York, Rabbi Schechter came from a family of rabbis and immediately after the 9/11 attacks, decided to join the military.
For Chaplain Schecter, the choice was simple: "I joined the military because of September 11th. Within seconds of the attack on our country, the military suddenly stopped being an undefined culture I was vaguely familiar with and their mission became absolutely clear—protection of our country, protection of our loved ones, protection of our very lives." Inspired by her father’s service as an Air Force chaplain in the 1960s, she decided to join the military.
For her continued service to military members and their families, her trailblazing faith and inspirational spirit, we dedicate this work to our friend, Chaplain Sarah Schecter.
