This hour-long extravaganza celebrates the rich and diverse fossil heritage of Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula. It is particularly targeted at a general audience but should still be of interest to the professional paleontologist with some surprise fossil finds that are not so well known. The talk will provide a little bit on everything but not a lot about anything. Featured fossils will include Permian sea lilies, a Mesozoic ichthyosaur, NZ's largest bivalve, cat's eye, skink and foraminifera, Eocene and Miocene starfish, Oligocene lanternfish, Miocene wrasse tooth plate, abyssal wood-eating limpets, Miocene soft-bodied sabellid worm fossils, the world's oldest ram's horn shell (Spirula), NZ's only known ghost shrimps fossilised inside their burrows, NZ's only bracket fungi and lichen fossils (Pliocene), the world's oldest flax snail fossils (Pliocene) and many more.
Presented by Bruce Hayward on April 28 2022.
