The Egyptian sphinx predates its Greek counterpart by over two thousand years, first appearing around 2500 BCE during Egypt's Old Kingdom. Unlike the Greek version, Egyptian sphinxes were male, featuring a human head typically depicting the pharaoh's face mounted on a lion's body, symbolizing the perfect fusion of royal intelligence and raw leonine power.
