Every Animal-Human Hybrid Creature in Mythology Explained
The Egyptian sphinx predates its Greek counterpart by over two thousand years, first appearing around 2500 BCE during Egypt's Old Kingdom. Unlike the Greek version, Egyptian sphinxes were male, featuring a human head typically depicting the pharaoh's face mounted on a lion's body, symbolizing the perfect fusion of royal intelligence and raw leonine power. The most famous example, the Great Sphinx of Giza, stretches an impressive 73 meters in length and rises 20 meters high, carved from a single massive limestone ridge on the Giza plateau. Scholars believe the face represents Pharaoh Khafre of the Fourth Dynasty, though this remains debated among Egyptologists.
