The changeling is one of Europe's most widespread child-stealing legends, deeply rooted in Celtic and Germanic folklore from the medieval period through the 19th century. According to tradition, fairies known as the Sidhe in Irish lore would steal healthy human infants and replace them with their own sickly offspring or enchanted objects disguised as babies. The substitute child appeared strange, with an old face, unusual eyes, constant crying, and an insatiable appetite that never satisfied. Parents discovered the deception through specific tests, placing the suspected changeling near fire, brewing beer in eggshells to provoke speech, or threatening it until it revealed its true nature.
