Kathleen Maher
Executive Director, Barnum Museum
A gifted speaker and noted authority on all things related to Phineas Taylor Barnum, Kathy has over thirty years of experience working at museums that are additionally recognized as National Registered historic sites and is celebrating over two decades of service to the historic Barnum Museum at the time of airing.
Throughout her career, she has envisioned, authored, and implemented numerous award-winning exhibitions and programs that explore a variety of 19th-century social historical themes and events. Still, she is most known for her disaster recovery efforts, saving the historic Barnum Museum from an EF1 tornado's ravages and both Hurricane Irene and Super Storm Sandy. 2020 has brought the challenge of Covid-19 Response and Recovery initiatives that will redefine how the Barnum Museum of the future will re-imagine audience engagement.
Under her leadership, the Barnum Museum focuses on new and innovative methods of experience developing, integrating history, arts, storytelling, gaming, science, and technology to create a dynamic 21st-century Museum for the future. The Barnum Museum has become a global model for disaster recovery, resilience, and re-envisioning. Maher speaks at conferences throughout the United States to teach through lessons-learned and illuminate the miraculous opportunities that can emerge from devastation if you're courageous enough to meet it head-on.
She is regularly sought for on-air appearances and research information as a guest historian for History Channel, Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E), Madison Square Garden Network (MSG), British Broadcasting Company (BBC), American Heroes Channel (AHC), Travel Channel, Public Broadcast Service (PBS), New England Cable News (NECN), CT Public Television (CPTV), and National Public Radio (NPR). She has presented a TEDx Talk and various news affiliates, including the NY Times, Hartford Courant, and Associated Press.
She holds gubernatorial appointments to the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Council, the State Library and Museum of Connecticut History and Heritage, Connecticut Civil War Commemoration Commission (2011-2016), the Arts, Culture, Tourism Transition Committee for the CT Governor (Elect 2018-2019), a member of the Museum and Science Center Committee for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions, awarded the 2019 Tourism Leader of the Year by the State of Connecticut and is a member of the CT Disaster Emergency Management Homeland Security Steering Committee for Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Recreation.
