Edo Komon (江戸小紋) is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique that originated during the Edo period (1603–1868). It is renowned for its intricate and delicate patterns created using fine stencils and dyeing processes. This art form is considered one of Japan's most refined and elegant textile crafts, often used in kimono-making.
The patterns are created using stencils, known as Ise Katagami (伊勢型紙), which are hand-carved from mulberry paper and reinforced with persimmon tannin for durability. This meticulous process makes each stencil a piece of art.
