I purchased this casserole dish primarily to see if it could be used as a glass microwave-safe food cover to keep my microwave clean by reducing splatters. As an added bonus, I would also be able to use it as a two-piece lidded casserole dish for baking as the borosilicate glass is cadmium and lead free, holds a 10-year guarantee, and is heat resistant from -40°C to 300°C or -40°F to 572°F though keep in mind, it’s still glass and subject to thermal shock under rapid or uneven heating or cooling conditions.

The capacity of the larger half of the dish is 3.5L and the lid is 1.6L or around 3.7 quarts and 1.7 quarts respectively. The packaging also indicates that the dishware is oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher safe as well as food grade and temper-treated glassware. Note that it is not safe for stovetop use or exposure to direct heat like a flame, electric burner, or grill top.

The shallower dish (lid) has a height of around 1.5” and a diameter of 9-3/4”. There are flat, wide hand holds to either side and a raised lip along the interior so that when placed on top of the taller dish, it stays in place and won’t slip off easily. You’ll also notice the the hand holds are slightly wider, so you can easily lift and separate the two halves. The taller dish has a diameter of 10” and height of around 3”. There is a slight bevel around the bottom so that the sides gently curve inward giving the dish a stronger structure and more stability. When the shallow dish is used as a cover the total height is 4-3/4” though you can flip it over for storage as well, as it nests and also stacks, for a lower profile.

I've been wanting to replace our plastic microwave cover as it is getting old, stained, and even partially melted when it was accidentally placed on a hot stove burner. I chose this casserole dish because the dimensions are roughly the same as the microwave cover, so I know that it’ll fit in our low-profile microwave, which is shorter than most standard microwaves. It also fits over our large dinner plates. However, the casserole dish doesn’t have any vents for steam to escape so it tends to build up concensation when reheating food in the microwave. The shorter dish can also be used as a microwave cover, though you will have less space under it for taller foods. As a microwave cover, its main drawback is the condensation buildup which can run down and collect on the spinning platter. It’s also heavier than the plastic cover, however, I don’t have to worry about it melting or staining. I am also more careful as to not drop or chip it. If microwaving for longer periods of time, it can get quite hot, so you may want to use oven gloves to handle it.

Although the glass is quite durable and resilient, if you have stone or composite hard countertops, I recommend using a trivet on it with these dishes as you wouldn’t want to crack or chip the dish or subject it to a potentially rapid temperature change, especially when removing from a hot microwave or oven.

As a casserole dish, it performs as expected in the oven and the deeper one is great for casseroles, roasted vegetables, and stews while the shallow one, if not using as a cover can be used as a pie plate. Just remember not to try to heat it straight from the freezer or fridge nor try to quickly heat or cook frozen foods in it without defrosting them first.

For my purposes, I actually found an identical glass microwave cover that has a silicone top handle and two drilled vents on the sides that I like a little better for that purpose, which I review in a separate video.
