My old plastic microwave cover was degrading with age and began picking up stains, getting cloudy, and even melted a little when it was accidentally placed on a hot stove. I chose the Le’Raze glass cover because it is plastic-free with no metal parts, and has nearly identical dimensions to the plastic cover, so it was the perfect size for our large dinner plates.
It’s essentially the same design as the 3.5 litre tempered glass casserole dish that I’d been using as a substitute microwave splatter guard, however, the Le’Raze glass cover has the added silicone handle on the top and two pre-drilled steam vent holes on the sides.
The interior height of the cover is 3 inches tall, while the knob adds another 1-1/8”. The inside diameter is 10” and it has two short wing-style hand holds on the sides. The silicone rubber knob is firmly attached with a ceramic plug; it has a hard scratchy texture and won’t melt, spark, or degrade in the microwave. The two vent holes on the sides of the cover are about ¼” in diameter and are located about halfway down from the top. Note that there are no vents on the top of the cover.
The Le’Raze cover is able to comfortably fit in my low-profile microwave, which has an interior height of 7”. After use, it can be hot to the touch, so I usually use oven gloves to handle it. The knob on top makes it easier to lift the cover up, though I recommend using two hands or lifting and supporting its weight with one of the hand holds on the sides, just in case the knob fails.
Despite the vent holes, plenty of steam and condensation can build up on the inner surface of the cover and may even run down the sides and pool on the surface it's on. However, it does its job keeping splatters contained and any ""explosions"" off the walls and ceiling of the microwave itself. making clean up easier. It can simply be hand washed and is also dishwasher safe.
As a microwave splatter guard, I think it works well, and I like that it’s plastic and metal-free. It’s a little on the heavier side, so you do have to be careful not to drop it, and I recommend always carrying it with two hands, not just by its knob. If microwaving for longer periods of time, it can get quite hot, so you’ll want to use oven gloves to handle it, but I don’t have to worry about it melting, staining, or leeching residues into my food.
