Shared Reading Kindergarten

Shared reading is a time in our day where we show students how print works with enlarged text, that are highly engaging and have wonderful illustrations and language that invite students in. I have used these books multiple times by Brand New Readers and highly recommend purchasing them for shared and guided reading (levels A-D). My focus is on letters and sounds, looking at word parts, and most of all using the illustrations to build meaning (comprehension work) which is always at the forefront. The illustrations and story line in these books are funny and have "kid friendly" topics. The illustrations lend themselves to have higher language support, which promotes vocabulary development and higher level thinking.

I can reread this text with the students and create a shared or interactive writing based on the lesson/central message of the book, which I was asking the students at the end of the lesson, "What advice would you give the character? Don't be afraid to try something new, because you might like it! Give things a chance."

I also wanted to try a different approach with my word work since I've analyzed the students' writing and know that some of them are ready to look at parts of words (word families) to solve a tricky word.

The energy that exudes from the kindergarteners is how shared reading should look and feel.
