Effective Questioning Techniques for Children with Selective Mutism
In this video, we explore how to ask questions to children with Selective Mutism in a way that reduces anxiety and helps them feel more comfortable. While asking questions may seem simple, for children with Selective Mutism, it can trigger anxiety and set them back in their progress. In this video, I share four effective types of questions you can use:
Indirect Questions – Subtle and less direct, these questions take the pressure off the child.
Force Choice Questions – Offering a choice between two options helps reduce the stress of having to respond.
Yes/No Questions – Helpful for children who struggle with nodding, shaking, or pointing.
Open-Ended Questions – These allow for more freedom in responses but should be used when the child is ready.
Each of these techniques helps children with Selective Mutism feel safe and supported in their communication journey. Watch the video to learn more about how to use these strategies effectively, and remember to leave a comment to share your experience or ask any questions! Wondering how to ask questions to kids with Selective Mutism without overwhelming them? Well, stay tuned because I've got some tips for you.
Questions can be tricky for kids with Selective Mutism because they find them unpredictable and they can trigger anxiety. But, there are ways to make it easier for them to answer.
First up, we've got indirect questions. These take the pressure off the child by phrasing the question more casually. For example, instead of asking directly, "What do you want to eat?" you could say, "I wonder what you would like to eat."
Next, we have force-choice questions. These are great for kids who struggle to think straight when they're feeling anxious. It's all about giving them options. For example, "Do you want the blue pen or the red pen?"
Then, there are yes/no questions. While not always ideal, they can be a good starting point for kids who struggle with verbal responses. You can help them by rephrasing and confirming their answer.
Lastly, we've got open-ended questions. These give kids the freedom to come up with their own answers, but they can be challenging for those who find answering difficult.
