Explore the rich history of the millinery trade in the city of Butte, Montana. Did you know that Butte was considered a fashion hub in its early days? One might think that the only people who purchased fashion items were those living in the homes of the Copper Kings, but nothing could be further from the truth. From the very founding of Butte, our merchants were scouring the world for the finest designer goods to bring to Butte.
This presentation is a result of the research done to prepare a collection of historic hats from the collections of the World Museum of Mining and local millinery collectors to be shown in the "Hats Off to Butte" millinery fashion show being held at the Phoenix Block Building on November 8th. A fashion show is focused on the hats themselves, but here we want to focus on people, families, and their remarkable achievements that helped to make what it is today.
Presented by Elizabeth Tritthart on September 24th, 2025.
