Golden Hour to City Lights | Halifax Long Exposure Time Blend with Tutorial

I keep a running list of locations and ideas I want to try for videos, and this one has been sitting there for quite some time. I just never got around to it. With a ban on hiking in the woods right now. Complete with $25,000 fines due to the extreme dryness and wildfires, it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally give it a go.

I headed to Alderney Landing to shoot the Halifax waterfront at sunset. I’ve been here before, but never for this: a time blend. The idea is to keep the same composition from sunset into early night, capturing that magical moment when the city lights switch on. By blending two or more images together, one with the warm tones of sunset and another with the artificial glow of the city, you end up with a result that’s more compelling than either on its own. I even show the simple Photoshop process I used to create the final image.

To push it further, I used a long exposure for the sunset frame and captured a few variations while holding the same spot.

At the end of the video, I also share the location of an upcoming trip I’m especially excited for. I’ll be taking a plane there soon, and I can only hope it leads to some amazing photography.
