In our modern society centered around shoes with lifted heels and a HUGE frequency of chair sitting, most of us have adapted to a walking gait that is more a "controlled" falling forward rather than a more instinctual and balanced posterior driven gait. The consequences of this are tighter hip flexors, a wearing down of the knee joints, and mini bouts of imperceptible whiplash that accumulate over time to contribute to an excessive curve of the upper spine (hyperkyphosis). A fun, and funny looking exercise to help restore our ability to use the posterior chain of the legs is sometimes called the Groucho Marx walk. You start by tilting your pelvis forward and allow your body to pitch forward somewhat while you push you hips back. the intention here is to get the weight of your hips behind the heels so that the back of the legs will engage to hold you up. Then, without bending the knees play with walking forward. To increase the challenge try to only put the heels on the floor and keep the ankle dorsiflexed so the ball of the foot remains in the air.
