Alice Walker was inducted into the California Hall of Fame by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and First Lady Maria Shriver in a ceremony at the California Museum on December 6, 2006. Introduction by Maria Shriver.
Alice Walker is the first African American woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her novel The Color Purple moved the nation, becoming a phenomenon that evolved into a Steven Spielberg movie and a Broadway musical. Her other bestselling novels have been translated into over two dozen languages. Born to sharecropper parents, Walker has received many of the nation's most prestigious awards for literature. Also an activist and social visionary whose advocacy for the disposed has spanned the globe, she participated in causes including the Civil Rights Movement, the Women’s Movement, and the Peace Movement. Walker believes she can change the world through words, and continues to inspire new generations.
