Cold Weather Camping Under a Small Rain Tarp - an off-track solo mountain adventure

This overnight hiking and camping adventure started high up on a mountain, day two of a three day excursion. The challenge was finding a suitable spot to camp on the side of the mountain, but I enjoy the challenge of heading off track and finding spots that feel like no one else have ever been to. It wasn't long before I had found a flat spot, with an incredible view. There was a natural pit that was a perfect location for my fire pit, and a small waterfall and waterhole to gather water from. Wood was wet but plentiful and I soon had a warm campfire lit. I used my small Rab Stiltarp as cover and camped out without a tent. My sleeping bag, mat and underquilt formed a perfect sleeping system to keep me warm in cold New Zealand Autumn temperatures. This was a simple, relaxing camp, an opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy the great outdoors.
