Braving the Elements: The 54th Annual Tradition Run | Meriden, CT | GoPro Experience

Welcome to my latest adventure captured on my GoPro 12 – the 54th Annual Tradition Run held on January 21, 2024, in Meriden, Connecticut. Join me as I take on a frigid 6.2-mile journey through icy, wind-swept roads, climbing daunting hills with no spectators, split-times, or awards.

Why would anyone brave such conditions? For hundreds of runners, it’s about camaraderie and challenging themselves against the elements – a true test of backbone, courage, and sense.

👟 The Beginning:
The Tradition Run started in 1970 when Bernie Jurale, a local high school teacher, ran to the radio towers on West Peak’s summit to celebrate his 70th birthday. Joined by students in the following years, Bernie's last run was at 79, but his spirit continues to inspire area runners, creating a tradition spanning over five decades. Today, the course finishes at Castle Craig on East Peak's summit in the Hanging Hills of Meriden.

🌨️ An Un-Race:
This event is unique – it's neither a fun run nor a conventional race. There are no time records, and results are listed alphabetically. Tailored for those who relish the challenge of snow and ice, you won't find any PR seekers here. The motto is "snow and ice are nice," and the only complaints you’ll hear are if the sun shines and the roads are clear.

The essence of the Tradition Run is best described by a newspaper quote: "Race officials said they never confirmed the name of the man who finished first because he ran back down the hill and left the park before they could speak to him."
