What truly unlocks the potential of persons with disabilities in India? Why does the environment matter more than individual effort?
In this episode, Pranav Kothari speaks with Dr Meenu Bhambhani, VP & Senior Grants Manager (Asia Pacific) at State Street and former Rajasthan Disability Commissioner. Drawing on her lived experience and decades of leadership, she shares how people struggle not because of their bodies but because systems, schools, and workplaces are not designed for them. The conversation explores how inclusive design, assistive technology, and accessible environments can build agency and unlock talent at scale.
Key Insights:-
Diversity within disability: India recognises 21 disabilities under law, highlighting that no single solution can meet the varied needs of people who are physical, sensory, intellectual, or neurodiverse.
Environment over effort: It is not the body but inaccessible design that disables. Barriers in classrooms, transport, and offices create dependence and exclusion.
Inclusion builds agency: Accessible spaces restore confidence and dignity by allowing people to make choices, live independently, and participate fully in society.
Technology as an equaliser: Motorised wheelchairs, text-to-speech tools, and universal design features empower not only persons with disabilities but also India’s growing elderly population.
Inclusion makes business sense: When one person cannot access a store, restaurant, or bank, the entire group is excluded. Accessible design widens customer bases and market opportunities.
Inclusive education for equity: Specialised centres build early skills, while inclusive schools open pathways to higher education, careers, and belonging.
Policy to practice gap: Disability rights are well-articulated in India’s laws, but progress depends on implementation, advocacy, and accountability at every level.
