Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979), a composition student of Fauré and Widor and an organ pupil of Louis Vierne, wrote only a few works for the organ. The Petit Canon is the second of a set of three pieces for organ she composed in 1911, and as well as being an ingenious canon (the answering part being in the tenor a quaver after the treble melody), it is a sensitively crafted work with beautiful, yet melancholy, harmony.
