The eviction notice came on a Tuesday, printed on bright yellow paper that seemed to mock Jennifer Hayes as she stood in the doorway of her apartment holding it with shaking hands. Thirty days. The notice cited repeated late payments, which was fair. Jennifer had been late four times in the past six months. Jennifer crumpled the paper and shoved it into her pocket before Lily could see it. Her daughter was in the living room, coloring at the coffee table, humming one of those songs they taught her in second grade. Seven years old and still believing the world was fundamentally good, that mommies could fix anything.
If only that were true.
That evening, after Lily fell asleep in their shared bed—Jennifer had given up her room months ago to save on heating costs—she sat at the kitchen table with a calculator and a stack of bills. Jennifer's fingers hovered over the delete key. Probably spam. Some elaborate phishing scheme. But curiosity made her click.

We represent the estate of Margaret Hayes, deceased. Our records indicate you are the sole surviving heir of Ms. Hayes, who passed away on November 3rd. Among her assets is a lighthouse property in Harborville, Maine, which has been bequeathed to you in accordance with her will.
Please contact our office at your earliest convenience to arrange transfer of the property deed and discuss the estate details.
Jennifer read it three times. Margaret Hayes. The name tugged at something distant in her memory. Her grandmother's sister, maybe? Someone her mother had mentioned once or twice before she died when Jennifer was sixteen?
She googled the law firm. Legitimate, with an actual office address in Portland, Maine. The next morning, using precious minutes from her lunch break, she called the number.
"Anderson & Associates," a pleasant voice answered.
"Hi, I received an email about an estate? Margaret Hayes?"
The receptionist transferred her immediately. A man's voice came on the line, professional but warm. "Ms. Hayes? This is Robert Anderson. Thank you for calling. I'm handling your great-aunt Margaret's estate."
Great-aunt. So it was real.
"I apologize for the impersonal email," Anderson continued. "We've been trying to locate you for several months. Margaret specified in her will that the lighthouse property should go to you, her nearest living relative. Are you familiar with the property?"
Jennifer's mind raced. "I've never even been to Maine."
