They Warned Her About the Cursed Winter Mansion — Sealed Room Had $320M Fortune

The snow fell in thick, heavy sheets against the windows of the Silver Creek Diner, making everything beyond the glass look like a watercolor painting slowly dissolving. Elena Vasquez stood behind the counter, refilling a coffee cup for the third time for a trucker who hadn't left a tip the first two rounds. Her hands were steady despite the exhaustion that had settled into her bones like frost, despite the fact that she'd been on her feet for eleven hours straight, despite knowing that when this shift ended at midnight, she'd drive home to a daughter who needed surgery they couldn't afford.
"More pie?" Elena asked, forcing brightness into her voice that she didn't feel.
The trucker grunted something that might have been no and went back to his phone. Elena moved down the counter, wiping surfaces that were already clean, checking the salt shakers that were already full, doing anything to keep moving because if she stopped, if she let herself think too hard about the numbers, about the hospital bills, about Dr. Morrison's careful voice explaining that Lily needed the operation within six months or her condition would become inoperable, she might fall apart right here between the pie case and the coffee station.
Lily was seven years old. She had her father's dark eyes and her mother's stubborn chin and a congenital spinal condition that was slowly, invisibly, stealing her ability to walk. The surgery cost $220,000. Elena made $9.50 an hour plus tips. She'd done the math so many times the numbers haunted her dreams. Even if she never ate, never paid rent, never bought Lily so much as a crayon, she'd need to work for twenty-three thousand hours. That was eleven years of full-time work. Lily didn't have eleven years. She had six months, maybe less.
Elena had tried everything. Medical loans, denied. Charity programs, waiting lists that stretched into next year. Crowdfunding, she'd raised $4,200, which sounded like a lot until you put it next to $220,000 and realized it was a drop of water trying to fill an ocean. The hospital social worker had given her pamphlets about financial assistance and experimental treatment programs, which was code for "we don't know how to help you, but we're sorry."
So Elena worked. She picked up every shift the diner would give her. She cleaned houses on her days off. She sold everything she owned that wasn't essential, furniture, jewelry, her mother's china, the guitar she'd planned to teach Lily to play someday. She smiled at customers who complained about cold coffee while her daughter's spine slowly collapsed. She swallowed her pride and her fear and her rage, and she kept moving.
The bell above the door chimed. Elena looked up to see Margaret Chen shuffling in, bundled in a coat that had seen better decades, snowflakes melting on her white hair. Margaret was eighty-three, a regular who came in every Tuesday night for chicken soup and gossip.
"Evening, Margaret," Elena said, already ladling soup into a bowl. "Usual spot?"
"You're too good to me, dear." Margaret settled onto her favorite stool at the counter. "How's your Lily doing?"
Elena's smile felt like it might crack her face. "She's okay. Staying strong."
Margaret's eyes, still sharp despite her age, saw right through the lie. "And the surgery?"
"We're figuring it out," Elena said, which was another lie. They weren't figuring anything out. They were drowning.
Margaret pulled a folded newspaper from her enormous purse. "I saw something that made me think of you. It's probably nothing, but, well, you never know."
She pushed the paper across the counter. It was open to the classifieds section, a small advertisement circled in red pen.

Elena stared at the ad. "Margaret, I don't understand. Why would I—"
