Maya folded the eviction notice carefully and tucked it into her purse. Sofia didn't need to see it. The eight-year-old was already too aware of how precarious their situation had become. "Mom, are you okay?" Sofia's voice carried that edge of worry no child should have to feel for their parent.
Maya manufactured a smile. "I'm fine, baby. Just tired. You ready for school?"

"Can we get hot chocolate after school?" Sofia asked hopefully.
Maya's heart clenched. Hot chocolate from the corner café cost three fifty. Three fifty that should go toward rent or medicine or food. But the hope in Sofia's voice made saying no feel like breaking a promise.
"We'll see, baby."
Sofia's expression shifted, hope dimming. She was learning the language of poverty too. "We'll see" meant no. "Maybe later" meant no. "We don't need that right now" meant they couldn't afford it and probably never would.
After putting Sofia on the school bus, Maya walked home through streets that felt colder than they had an hour ago. The eviction notice burned in her purse like evidence of all the ways she was failing her daughter.
Back in the apartment, Maya made coffee and opened her laptop. The ancient machine took five minutes to boot up, groaning and wheezing like it might die any second. She couldn't afford to replace it, so she prayed to whatever gods listened to broke single mothers that it would last just a little longer.
