In this presentation, Joann gave a polyvagal-informed overview of the autonomic nervous system-regulating elements embedded in classical yoga practices. For example, in a clinical setting, the therapist can evaluate the client’s nervous-system state and, as an adjunct to whichever other therapeutic methods they use, offer a simple yogic intervention which has the optimal shape, pattern, tempo, and effort, to regulate that state. The client or patient can then learn the intervention and use it on their own as a self-help tool. The presentation included a few of the basic yogic interventions used in this system.
Dr. Porges's review of Joann's book:
In Trauma Healing in the Yoga Zone Joann Lutz transforms yoga practices into a neurobiological based therapeutic strategy that facilitates and optimizes health through enhanced autonomic regulation. This model, which she labels as Nervous System-Informed Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (NITYA), is the product of an insightful consilience of ancient traditions with contemporary neuroscience. Embracing the model will lead to deeper understanding of the wisdom embedded in yoga and the powerful neurophysiological impact it may have on rehabilitating mental and physical health.
About the Felt Sense Polyvagal Approach to Trauma & Addiction Group
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Felt Sense Polyvagal Approach to Trauma & Addiction Group is a place for you to explore with others, through a polyvagal lens, the experiences of trauma and addiction. We are focusing on understanding addiction through the lens of the nervous system, as an adaptive response to maladaptive environments. This group is growing in leaps and bounds indicating a hunger for change, for the kind of transformative change that polyvagal theory brings us. The group interacts online in the Polyvagal Institute Community on Mighty Network. Once every few weeks the group meets live on Zoom for an hour of exploration and discussion with a guest presenter.
