Whether they are rejoicing or grieving, as the lyrics here hypothesise, or then neither of the two, may well remain unknown to beings that roost highest in the tree of life. Surely, that won’t stop the latter from reading their own concepts into what may well be an instinctive, life preserving or life affirming behaviour of a flock of insentient beings they call birds. Although they fall prey to calamities of their own, birds are no more burdened by existential woes than by gravity. None of this of course is lost on Gillian Welch and her husband and musical collaborator David Rawlings, a pair of rare birds in the world of country music and Americana, but still in The Bells And The Birds they look for answers to their existential and romantic dilemmas in bell chimes and birdsong.
