CENTIPEDE – “Septober Energy” part 4 (1971)

In the first half of the '70s were revealed shining examples of the English trends of that period, made up of balanced experiments between the avant-garde, jazz and a special form of rock which was the result of disparate musical experiences deriving from other matrices, from electronics and from the evolutions of "erudite" music. In this period worked Keith Tippett, a pianist and composer who was very prominent in the English music scene of those years: after two excellently crafted albums, in 1971 he organised, supported by Robert Fripp as producer, the huge formation of Centipede which boasted 50 elements in a memorable double album of creative improvisations and beautiful combinations entitled “Septober Energy”.
Certainly, while listening to it again today, more than 50 years after its publication, it is far from perfect, exaggeratedly imposing (four about 20-minute tracks without titles!) and at times difficult, but it was a courageous and audacious experiment with superb and sometimes chilling moments of pure energy. The list of participants is long and very impressive, but it’s sufficient to mention most of the members of Soft Machine, Blossom Toes, parts of Nucleus, most of the Keith Tippett Group, Keith's wife Julie Driscoll, and a certain number of members of King Crimson.
The last track is simply immense. It develops slowly from Tippett's piano notes, supported later by a great bass line with three drums (Wyatt in the center, John Marshall on the left and Tony Fennell of Blossom Toes on the right): it leads to some of the purer jazz-rock solos, with Elton Dean's saxophone in splendid evidence, and then a choir that repeats "Unite for every nation, unite for all the land, unite for liberation, unite for the freedom of man". The closing is played by the trumpet of Marc Charig and the piano.

Nella prima metà degli anni '70 si rivelarono fulgidi esempi della tendenza inglese di quel periodo, fatta di sperimentazioni equilibrate tra l'avanguardia, il jazz e una speciale forma di rock che era il risultato di disparate esperienze musicali derivanti da altre matrici, dall'elettronica e dalle evoluzioni della musica “erudita”. In questo periodo operò Keith Tippett, pianista e compositore di grande spicco nel panorama musicale inglese di quegli anni: dopo due album di ottima fattura, nel 1971 organizzò, coadiuvato da Robert Fripp come produttore, la gigantesca formazione dei Centipede che vantava 50 elementi in un memorabile doppio album di improvvisazioni creative e bellissime combinazioni intitolato “Septober Energy”.
Certamente riascoltarlo oggi, a più di 50 anni dalla sua pubblicazione, è tutt'altro che perfetto, esageratamente imponente (quattro brani di circa 20 minuti senza titoli!) e a tratti difficile, ma fu un esperimento coraggioso e audace con superbi e talvolta agghiaccianti momenti di pura potenza. L'elenco dei partecipanti è lungo e davvero impressionante, ma è sufficiente citare la maggior parte dei membri dei Soft Machine, dei Blossom Toes, parti dei Nucleus, gran parte del Keith Tippett Group, la moglie di Keith, Julie Driscoll, e un certo numero di membri dei King Crimson.
L'ultima traccia è semplicemente immensa. Si sviluppa lentamente dalle note del pianoforte di Tippett, supportato poi da una grande linea di basso con tre batterie (Wyatt al centro, John Marshall a sinistra e Tony Fennell dei Blossom Toes a destra): si arriva ad alcuni dei più puri assolo jazz-rock, con il sassofono di Elton Dean in splendida evidenza, e poi ad un coro che ripete "Uniti per ogni nazione, uniti per tutta la terra, uniti per la liberazione, uniti per la libertà dell'uomo". La chiusura è suonata dalla tromba di Marc Charig e dal pianoforte.
