In this video we take a visit to the newly opened O-Bahn tunnel. Built as part of the $160 million O-Bahn City Access Project, the tunnel allows O-Bahn buses an uninterrupted run from the start of the busway at Park Road to the CBD. The project comprised of an underground tunnel from Grenfell Street in the CBD to Hackney Road, then bus lanes along Hackney Road to the start of the busway.
In this video we visit the western tunnel portal at Grenfell street in the CBD. Here we see some of the typical buses that operate on the O-Bahn including Scania K230UB's, K280UB's and K320UA's with Custom Coaches 'CB60 Evo II' & 'CB80 bodies'. We also see some regular Adelaide Metro bus services at the intersection of Grenfell St & East Terrace.
The O-Bahn busway is one of the few examples in the world of a guided busway. The busway runs out towards Modbury in Adelaide's northeastern suburbs. Stage 1 of the project from Park Road to Paradise Interchange opened in 1986, while stage 2 to Tea Tree Plaza opened in 1989. The O-Bahn tunnel serves as an extension to this busway.
