If you Porsche won't start it could be the ignition switch, or it could be just a bad battery. Your Porsche Carrera Boxster Cayman could have a bad clutch safety switch, or it could be a bad starter motor relay that is stopping you from getting your car running. The problem could even be a bad Crank Position Sensor CPS or a failed starter motor itself. These are all things that could be an issue in your Porsche if you are not able to start it.
Step 1: Wiggle the key in the ignition switch a little bit and then try and start the car. If this works, then you need to replace your plastic switch about a $10 USD part.
Step 2: Move the steering wheel back and forth to make sure it's not causing an issue.
Step 3: Test your car battery upfront, you should have 12.5 volts or there about to start the car. If you find that your battery doesn't have a full 12 volts then you will need to replace it. Plan on spending $150 plus USD.
Step 4: If you have a TIP or Auto transmission try moving the gear shifter back and forth, even be a bit aggressive with pushing it into PARK and DOWN into DRIVE.
If you have a manual transmission, make sure you're depressing the clutch peddle before you try and turn the key.
Step 5: Check your fuses, look at ROW B Fuse 8 then in ROW C Fuse 1 and 2 then 4.
Step 6: If you have a manual transmission car, jump your clutch safety switch under the dash and see if this gets you going. If it does, you need to replace the little plastic switch, or just use and leave the jumper wire in there. With the jumper left in you will no longer have to push down the clutch to start your Porsche Boxster 986 Cayman 987 or Porsche Carrera 911 996 997.
Step 7: Next check the starter motor relay in the back of the Porsche, it's the first one by the long fuse. Pull the relay and use the jumper wire you made and connect it to pins 30 and 87. If you car now starts you will need a new relay which is cheap about $15 USD or so. You can drive the car home or to the shop with he relay jumper. If you still can't get the car started it could be you have a dead starter which could cost you $250 to $500 USD.
Step 8: Get into the car and watch the tach needle as you try and start the car. It should lift off the 0 mark on the tach just a little bit when you turn the key. If it doesn't move while turning the key then the issue of your Porsche Boxster 986 or Porsche Cayman 987 or Porsche Carrera 911 996 997 no start is the Crank Position Sensor which is located between the engine and transmission halfway up. If it does move, then keep looking for the issue. Normally this happens when in the morning you can start the car just fine, but after the car gets warmed up it won't start. Let the car cool off and if it's the CPS the car will start back up.
Step 9: If none of this help get your car started, then you have an issue with the alarm or immobilizer under the seat. This means sending in the alarm box, the ECU box, and your key to have them fixed and repaired.
