মালদ্বীপ, আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে মালদ্বীপ প্রজাতন্ত্র দক্ষিণ এশিয়ায় অবস্থিত ভারত মহাসাগরের একটি দ্বীপ দেশ। এর রাজধানীর নাম মালে। দক্ষিণ এশীয় আঞ্চলিক জোট সার্ক এর সদস্য। অপরূপ সৌন্দর্যের লীলাভূমি এ দেশ বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে নিচু দেশ।

মালদ্বীপের নামকরণ নিয়ে যথেষ্ট মতভেদ লক্ষ করা যায়। কেউ কেউ দাবি করেন মালদ্বীপ অর্থ হচ্ছে ‘মেল দ্বীপ রাজ’ বা পুরুষশাসিত রাজ্য। মূলত ‘দ্বীপ’ একটি সংস্কৃত শব্দ আর ‘মাল’ শব্দটি দেশটির রাজধানীর নামের সাথে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ। ঔপনিবেশিক আমলে ডাচ্রা তাদের নথিপত্রে এ দ্বীপপুঞ্জের নাম মালদ্বীপ বলে উল্লেখ করেন। পরে ব্রিটিশরাও একই নাম ব্যবহার করেন, যা দেশটির স্থানীয় নাম হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতো। শ্রীলঙ্কান প্রাচীন সাহিত্য ‘মহাবংশ’-এ মালদ্বীপকে বলা হয়েছে ‘মহিলাদ্বীপ’ বা নারীদের দ্বীপ। তবে কিছু কিছু পণ্ডিত মনে করেন, মালদ্বীপ শব্দটি এসেছে সংস্কৃত মালাদ্বীপ থেকে যার অর্থ ফুলের মালার দ্বীপ। তবে প্রাচীন বৈদিক সাহিত্যে এ দ্বীপকে বলা হয়েছে ‘লাক্কাদ্বীপ’ বা শত হাজার দ্বীপ। তবে মালদ্বীপে এক হাজারের বেশি দ্বীপ থাকলেও এক লাখ দ্বীপ নেই। আবার আরব পর্যটক ইবনে বতুতা এ দ্বীপকে বলেছেন ‘মহল দ্বীপ’ বা রাজপ্রাসাদের দ্বীপ। আর মালদ্বীপের রাষ্ট্রীয় প্রতীকে ইবনে বতুতার ব্যাখ্যার নিরিখে এখনো মহল বা রাজপ্রাসাদের ছবি ব্যবহৃত হয়।


One of the most popular and biggest islands in the Maldives, Maafushi is located nearly thirty kilometres away from Male in Kaafu Atoll. It is in elongated form and covers an area of around 1270 x 265 m. If you want to indulge in various exciting activities as well as mouthwatering exotic delicacies, then this island is a great choice. Moreover, reaching there is quite easy as well. Just take a flight to the Male International Airport (also known as Velana International Airport). After that, you can choose from two options to reach Maafushi Island—via speedboat or via ferry. The speedboat takes lesser time and is more readily available. Thus, it is preferred by tourists. On the other hand, travelling via ferry is very cheap. Make the decision as per your requirements.

You will easily find a direct speedboat to Maafushi from the Male International Airport. It would be great if you book your ride prior in order to avoid any kind of convenience and last-minute hassle. All you have to do is drop a mail to the service provider. Generally, the frequency of speedboats is quite good from morning to evening. You can check the availability of seats, timings, and fares on their websites. Via speedboat, it takes less than one hour to reach Maafushi Island.

Commuting via a ferry is surely a better option for those who are on a budget trip. Take a ferry or a speedboat from the Male International airport to Male Island where the ferry terminal is located. This ride will cost you one dollar to reach Male Island. You will reach the terminal in just ten minutes. Travelling via speedboat is very fast. It takes just four minutes to reach the next location and it costs approximately two dollars.

You can take a taxi to Jetty 1 or the ‘Maafushi Ferry’ after you have reached Male Island. The taxi ride costs two dollars and takes ten minutes to reach the ferry point. Take the ferry service to Maafushi from the jetty and it will cost around three dollars per person. The journey will take nearly one and a half hours. You cannot book your ferry ticket online. So you have to reach there one hour prior for buying tickets. Please note that food and water will not be accessible on the board. Also, the ferry is not available on Fridays.
