A walk from Stirling to the Battle of Bannockburn Monument, via Cambusbarron.
The walk starts near King's Park, below Stirling Castle, and makes its way on a footpath that eventually takes us to Cambusbarron. There, we look at the site of what has been variously known as Bruce's Well, Chapel Well and Christ's Well, a holy well near the location of an old chapel, and once a water supply for Cambusbarron. Water from this well was used during services at Bannockburn immediately before the battle.
From there we skirt Gillies Hill and soak up panoramic views of Stirling Castle and mountains to the north, like Ben Ledi and Ben Lomond. At Gillies Hill we learn how important the sma' folk were at the Battle of Bannockburn.
We then follow a few small country roads and turn into Tinkers Loan footpath, which leads us over the motorway and directly to the Bannockburn Monument with the awesome statue of King Robert the Bruce. Under dark rolling clouds we hear how an English army of some twenty seven thousand men under the command of King Edward the Second, was defeated by just six thousand Scots. A walk in history, and a walk for freedom.
