At teamLab Planets Tokyo, 13,000 real orchids float and move in response to your presence—an immersive, living art garden unlike anything else in the world.
You’re not just looking at flowers — you’re inside them.
In this immersive installation called the Floating Flower Garden, 13,000 living orchids float in midair, gently shifting as they respond to your presence. As you walk through, the flowers rise to make space. If you sit, they lower again — always avoiding contact, yet always aware of where you are.
It’s peaceful, surreal, and unlike any garden I’ve ever experienced.
The mirrored floor and walls reflect the blooms endlessly, creating the illusion that you’re floating in a sky made of orchids. The experience feels meditative, dreamlike — like walking into a moment that shouldn’t exist.
But beyond the beauty, there’s something here for gardeners and plant lovers to appreciate, too.
These orchids aren’t artificial. They’re real, blooming epiphytes — plants that grow without soil, drawing moisture and nutrients from the air. That’s how they’re able to float like this, their roots exposed, thriving in a space designed as both art and living ecosystem.
Did you know?
Orchids are the largest family of flowering plants on Earth, with over 25,000 documented species — and new ones are still being discovered. Some orchids grow in tropical rainforests, others cling to mountaintops. A few even mimic insects to attract pollinators. Their resilience, mystery, and diversity make them the perfect subject for this living, moving installation.
Whether you’re an orchid enthusiast, a modern art lover, or simply a curious traveler, this is something worth seeing. And if you can’t be there in person, I hope this video brings you closer to what it feels like to walk through a space that watches you back.
🌸 Would you sit beneath a sky of orchids?
Share your thoughts in the comments — and if you’re an orchid grower, I’d love to know your favorite variety.

More about the exhibit:
This installation is part of teamLab Planets Tokyo, an immersive art space created by the interdisciplinary collective teamLab. Their work merges digital technology, nature, and light to turn visitors into participants.
The Floating Flower Garden has appeared in other cities, but this version in Tokyo is especially breathtaking — for its scale, complexity, and integration with real, living plants.
teamLab Planets includes other immersive experiences as well — but this one, this living orchid forest, is where time slows down and nature takes center stage.
The moment you walk in, everything quiets.
You become still.
And the garden responds.
