Discover The Pontiac Trans Am Engine That Silenced The EPA 6.6-liter W72 400 (1978), in a must watch video! Learn about the history and controversy surrounding this legendary power plant.
The macho TA , unleashed in the Late 1970s, was a radical and game-changing engine that shook up the SCCA and American racing-but its story is filled with technical drama, innovation, and unintended consequences.
The Pontiac 400 engine was high-performance "Macho Trans Am," a special version created by two Arizona brothers, Dennis and Kyle Mecham, who found a loophole to escape restrictive EPA regulations. They purchased new Trans Ams from Mecham Pontiac, transferred ownership to their own company (DKM), and then significantly upgraded the engines—effectively selling modified cars not subject to the EPA's new-car rules.

EPA Loophole: Once the Trans Ams were "retitled" to DKM, they were technically used cars—even with zero miles. This meant they weren't subject to the strict emissions regulations that killed performance in the late '70s.
Engine Modifications: The Macho Trans Ams featured the W72/L78 Pontiac 400 motor, boosted to 200 horsepower. DKM added performance upgrades like rejetted carburetors, recurved distributors, headers, and true dual exhausts, transforming the cars into some of the most powerful muscle cars of the era.
Impact: The Macho Trans Am “flipped the bird” (as in, “gave the finger”) to the EPA’s efforts to curb performance with aggressive emissions standards. Roughly 325 were built from 1978-1980, with legendary street and drag performance.
End of Era: By 1980, tightening rules and the phase-out of the Pontiac 400 forced the discontinuation of the Macho Trans Am concept. The turbocharged 301 that followed failed to match its predecessor’s power and reputation.
Why It's Legendary
This engine and the Macho Trans Am became muscle car legends for rebelling against EPA regulation, keeping true American performance alive when most powerful V8s were disappearing, and exploiting legal gray areas many manufacturers avoided.
The Macho Trans Am story is a unique case of engineering ingenuity and regulatory defiance during the “malaise” era of American muscle cars.

innovations:
Rejetted Carburetor and High-Performance Intake: The factory carburetor was replaced or modified for richer fuel delivery, and the intake manifold was upgraded for greater airflow. Many owners opted for Edelbrock or Holley carburetors for improved throttle response.
Ram Air III Camshaft Swap: The camshaft was changed to either a Ram Air III profile or equivalent, increasing valve lift/duration and providing more aggressive timing, letting the engine breathe better and increasing horsepower.
Distributor Recurve: Fine-tuning the ignition timing curve allowed for optimal spark advance, improving combustion efficiency and throttle response.
Hooker Headers and Free-Flow Dual Exhaust: Factory exhaust manifolds and restrictive catalytic converters were replaced with high-flow headers and true dual exhaust systems, dramatically reducing backpressure and enhancing output.
Cylinder Head Swap or Modification: Some modifications involved swapping the factory 6X-8 heads for 6X-4s to reduce combustion chamber volume and boost compression ratio, or milling the heads for similar effect.
Gear Ratio Changes: Upgrading rear gears (numerically higher ratios) helped maximize acceleration, keeping the engine in the optimal power band and multiplying torque to the ground.
Suspension and Driveline Upgrades: While primarily engine-focused, modifications sometimes included better posi carriers and driveline strength to handle increased power.
