Ballerina Believed Husband Was Unfit to Be a Father Prior to Murder: Psychiatrist

Psychiatrist Brad Broeder took the stand on Wednesday afternoon where he recalled numerous meetings he had with accused killer Ashley Benefield where they talked about her frustration with the court system and keeping her husband, Doug Benefield, away from their child. Ashley opened up to Broeder about how she felt Doug wasn’t a good father, and was unfit to play a role in their child's life.

In September 2020, Ashley Benefield ran to a neighbor's house in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, and stated she had just shot her husband. Douglas Benefield had several gunshot wounds to his leg, arm, and chest area. Ashley Benefield claims she shot him in self-defense after months of alleged abuse. She was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Ashley Benefield made bail and has been living with family and her daughter since the crime.
