Great Falls Park - Ultimate Waterfall Outside DC! | Virginia Side

This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Washington DC to experience the annual cherry blossom bloom and revisit the Capital after 15 years. These vibrantly-colored natural wonders attract thousands of visitors to the city. Many events take place in DC during this time including: the Cherry Blossom Festival, Kite Flying Competitions and hundreds of local food trucks. Join me in this short mini series exploring Washington DC as well as numerous activities in the surrounding regions.

Welcome to Great Falls, VA. Near the nation’s capital the Potomac River builds up speed and force traversing large boulders and passing through scenic gorges. This dramatic landscape encompasses Mather Gorge, named after the First National Park Service Director - Stephen Mather. Great Falls is a popular destination attracting tourists from around the world. The Potomac River was a trading place for Indigenous tribes and early colonists. This sprawling wilderness features numerous riverside hiking trails and overlooks to view Great Falls from different angles. For this adventure my father and I will explore the Virginia side of Great Falls, which features more overlooks and opportunities to get close to the water. The “River Trail” is a peaceful stroll alongside the roaring falls and the perfect weekend escape from city life.
