Botswana's ostrich farming industry faces significant challenges, including underutilized infrastructure and operational inefficiencies despite favorable climatic conditions and government support. The Gaborone based Multi Species Abattoir, constructed to process ostriches has struggled with low throughput and frequent closures leading to financial losses and discouraging investment in the sector.
In an effort to address these issues a delegation from the Botswana Ostrich Farmers Association (BOFA) visited Oudtshoorn, South Africa, to benchmark the region's ostrich farming practices. The visit revealed significant differences in infrastructure and management between the two countries. The key issue of this discussion is how Botswana can effectively restructure its ostrich farming infrastructure to align with successful models while overcoming current operational challenges.
