Opinion and fact adjectives
Sometimes we use two or more adjectives together.
-My brother lives in a nice new house.
-In the kitchen there is a beautiful large round wooden table.
Adjectives like large/ new/ round/ wooden are fact adjectives. They give information about size, age, shape, material, etc.
Adjectives like nice/beautiful are opinion adjectives. They tell us what the speaker thinks of something or somebody.
Opinion adjectives usually go before fact adjectives.
General and specific opinion adjectives
+General: good, bad, lovely, nice, beautiful, brilliant, excellent, awful, important, nasty, strange, etc.
+Specific:
-food: delicious, tasty, …
-buildings/furniture: comfortable, uncomfortable, …
-people/animals: clever, intelligent, friendly, …
When we use two or more opinion adjectives together, we put general opinion adjectives before specific opinion adjectives.
-Last night, we ate some nice tasty soup at the party.
-This is a nasty uncomfortable armchair.
-I have a lovely intelligent animal.
Sometimes we also use two or more fact adjectives together. Usually we put fact adjectives in this order.
-size/length: big, small, huge, tiny, long, short, tall, high, …
-age: old, young, new, ancient, modern, …
-shape: round, square, oval, …
-colour: red, white, black, blue, green, …
-participle: finished, broken, running, missing, …
-origin: German, American, Thai, …
-material: paper, brick, plastic, wooden, gold, diamond, …
-type/class: chemical, human, domestic, electronic, …
-purpose: walking (boots), sleeping (bag), book (bag), tennis (court), …
Consequently, when we use two or more opinion and fact adjectives together, the order is as follows.
1. general opinion
2. specific opinion
3. size/length
4. age
5. shape
6. colour
7. participle
8. origin
