Robert William Pickton, born on October 24, 1949, in British Columbia, Canada, is one of the country's most notorious serial killers. Pickton lived on a pig farm in Port Coquitlam, a rural area near Vancouver, where he operated a family-run farm and a local meat processing business.

During the 1990s and early 2000s, Vancouver experienced a disturbing rise in missing women cases, particularly from the city's Downtown Eastside, an area known for poverty, drug addiction, and prostitution. Many vulnerable women, mostly sex workers, vanished without a trace, and suspicion slowly grew around Pickton’s pig farm.

In 2002, police raided Pickton's farm while investigating illegal firearms. During the search, they discovered personal belongings of missing women and human remains scattered around the property, including body parts mixed with pig meat, leading to horrifying conclusions.

Pickton was arrested and charged with multiple murders. Initially, he faced 27 charges, though he later stood trial for six counts of second-degree murder. In 2007, he was convicted on all six counts and sentenced to life in prison without parole eligibility for 25 years — the maximum sentence in Canada at the time.

Investigators believe Pickton murdered as many as 49 women, though he allegedly confessed to an undercover officer that his goal was 50 victims. The case exposed serious police failures, as authorities had overlooked warnings and evidence for years, leading to public outrage.

Pickton’s crimes are among Canada’s most chilling examples of violence against marginalized women, sparking major debates about how law enforcement handles missing person cases, especially involving vulnerable communities.

Robert Pickton remains in prison, and his pig farm was demolished after the investigation.
