Episode 7: Bass Strait Crossing Part 3 – Bass Strait to Eden
The final episode.

This episode of the journey covers the next day, the third and last in our crossing of Bass Strait. It was a rough night as expected, and we had only four hours “sleep” each, in two blocks of two hours. At this time of the year, night lasts for 14 hours here.

In the morning, 40 miles off the Victorian coast, the wind built to 30 knots. Squalls surrounded us. But with daylight and the ability to see what we were doing, we were confident to give Ocealys her head. She took off, sitting mostly around 10 knots and occasionally exceeding 14 knots.

After 5 hours we rounded Cape Howe, entering NSW waters. The sun came out, the sea went flat, and the land sheltered us from the strong westerly winds still ripping through Bass Strait to the south. It was like arriving on another planet.

After a lazy doddle up the coast we finally dropped anchor in Twofold Bay, across the way from the town of Eden, in the late afternoon. Mission accomplished.

The video finishes with a brief photo essay of the leg from Eden to Coffs Harbour which Bill and I sailed after Tim went home.
