Chopin dedicated this piece to Madame Nathaniel de Rothschild, a prominent French aristocrat and patroness of the arts. He was nearing the end of his life when he wrote it.
The waltz’s bittersweet character reflects his failing health and complex relationships, especially his recent breakup with George Sand.
