Ludwigsburg railway station is served by regional trains for example between Stuttgart and Würzburg or Pforzheim. However, in the latter case, a more direct route is available which uses part of the high speed line from Stuttgart to Mannheim. This route is also used by regional trains, which cover the distance between Stuttgart and Pforzheim in roughly half the time of those taking the detour via Ludwigsburg.
Ludwigsburg station has two island platforms and one side platform. At the southern end of the station, there is a pedestrian overpass with elevators at either end and stairs to the two island platforms. A third elevator serves one of the island platforms, namely the one designated for local S-Bahn trains. While regional trains to Stuttgart have no intermediate stops, the next stop for S-Bahn trains is Kornwestheim (see • Haushahn hydraulic glass elevator at Kornw... and • ThyssenKrupp traction glass elevator at Ko... ).
More recently, elevators to all platforms were installed in the main part of the station roughly halfway down the platforms. While this might have played a part in why the elevators at the overpass are still original from 1987, elevators this old are getting rare nowadays at railway stations in Germany. Apart from their age, they are fairly standard train station elevators, and they are very similar to each other, except for the elevator at one end of the overpass having two cab entrances. All overpass elevators use the same roped hydraulic drive system, which differs from more common roped hydraulic layouts in the orientation of the sheave atop the hydraulic piston.
