A Dream Ride Through the Mountains

Going to the Chenab Bridge was not just a plan, it was a dream. And on 18th June, that dream came true.
I was among the first Indians to book a PNR on the Kashmir Vande Bharat Express. The moment I cleared security at Platform 1 of Katra, I rushed to the front, clicked photos of the train, with the train, and found so many others doing the same. That’s what this machine does, it makes you fall in love at first sight.
With the Vaishno Devi shrine in the backdrop, we departed Katra sharp at 8:10 AM. Sitting on the 180° rotatable seats of the Executive Class, we laughed, explored, and soaked in the journey. But the real thrill began as we crossed three tunnels and reached the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge.
After passing the scenic Reasi station, it happened. We crossed the Chenab Bridge. At 359 meters, it’s the world’s highest railway bridge, and crossing it gave me literal goosebumps. Eyes welled up. That moment was everything.
Right after Chenab, a hot cup of tea with Himalayan views hit different. We passed Sangaldan station, entered Tunnel T-50 (India’s longest transportation tunnel at 12.775 km), and reached Banihal by 9:44 AM, a bit early. Clicked more photos at the halt and continued the ride.
Then came the Pir Panjal Tunnel, India’s second-longest rail tunnel, and finally, the train emerged into Jannat, the Kashmir Valley.
Had breakfast while watching the stunning valley glide by. I’d rate it a solid 8 out of 10. Interacted with officers, staff, and some amazing co-passengers. Everyone on this route shares something — love for this engineering marvel.
And then we reached Srinagar, the summer capital of India. On time. Satisfied. Spellbound.

Kashmir Vande Bharat Express
The Kashmir Vande Bharat Express operates on the newly completed Udhampur Srinagar Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), one of the most challenging railway projects in India. The train covers 189 km between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) and Srinagar (SINA) in under 3 hours, offering breathtaking views, tunnels, and engineering marvels.
The USBRL project spans 272 km, with 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, including the iconic Chenab Bridge which is the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. It connects Udhampur, Katra, Banihal, Qazigund, Anantnag, Srinagar, and Baramulla through one of the most difficult Himalayan terrains.
Kashmir Vande Bharat trains are specially designed for sub-zero temperatures with features like heated windshields, heating systems for water tanks and toilets, thermal insulation, and snow-resistant technology. The interiors offer modern amenities like 180 degree rotatable seats in Executive Class, infotainment, Wi-Fi, power outlets, and onboard catering.
Train 26401 departs from Katra at 08:10 AM and arrives in Srinagar at 11:08 AM
Train 26402 departs from Srinagar at 02:00 PM and arrives in Katra at 04:58 PM

Train 26403 departs from Katra at 02:55 PM and arrives in Srinagar at 05:53 PM
Train 26404 departs from Srinagar at 08:00 AM and arrives in Katra at 10:58 AM
(No service on Wednesdays)
All trains halt at Banihal and cover the distance in approximately 2 hours 58 minutes.
Currently, the train originates from Katra, but it was initially planned to run from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar. The extension to Jammu Tawi is expected soon, further improving connectivity to the Kashmir Valley.
