The story of Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar is linked to the legend of the Vindhya mountain range. The deity Vindhya, wanting to be taller than Mount Meru, worshipped Lord Shiva, who pleased by his devotion, manifested as two forms of the Jyotirlinga: Omkareshwar on the island and Mamleshwar on the mainland across the Narmada River. Another legend states that the Mamleshwar temple was built by the Pandavas during their exile. It is considered necessary to visit both temples to complete the pilgrimage.
The story begins with the mountain deity Vindhya seeking to be as tall as or taller than Mount Meru.
To achieve this, he began a severe penance by creating a Shiva lingam out of sand and clay and worshipping it.
Lord Shiva was pleased with Vindhya's devotion and appeared before him in two forms: Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar, split across the Narmada River.
Vindhya was granted the boon of growing taller but was also cautioned against obstructing the path of Shiva's devotees.
Later, a dispute arose between the gods and Vindhya, who had become a problem by obstructing the sun. The gods approached the sage Agastya, who then traveled to the south and asked Vindhya to let him pass, which Vindhya refused.
Another popular tale suggests that the Mamleshwar temple was constructed by one of the Pandava brothers, Nakula, during their time in exile.

ஓம்காரேஷ்வர் கோவில்: இதுவும் மத்திய பிரதேசத்தின் காண்ட்வா மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள மந்தாதா தீவில் நர்மதை நதிக்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு ஜோதிர்லிங்கத் தலமாகும்.
உஜ்ஜைனி: இது மத்தியப் பிரதேசத்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ஒரு நகரமாகும். இங்கு மகாகாளேஷ்வர் கோயில் உள்ளது. இதுவும் 12 ஜோதிர்லிங்கத் தலங்களில் ஒன்றாகும். ஓம்காரேஷ்வர் கோயில் உஜ்ஜைனிக்கு தெற்கே சுமார் 100 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது.
