For drone pilot students or operators only:)
What would a drone collision look like in one of the worst case scenarios imaginable? Why is drone pilot training so important? Here we illustrate based on a typical scenario of a zealous drone pilot getting in over his head under pressure from a company looking to take shortcuts.
Time Stamps: Pre accident phase: 8:09 The accident phase: 15:57 The aftermath: 20:45 Rescue operations: 21:34 Oliver's arrest: 23:34 Oliver in Jail: 26:13 Investigation: 26:55

It is a story of a drone pilot who got too confident, and took a job within a high risk area. He even got NAV Canada approvals, but still ended up crashing into a fully loaded passenger helicopter (14 aboard) on its landing approach. The story details his background, his RPAS flight planning, the reaction to the collision potential as he heard a helicopter coming in, then his final inadequate reactions when the collision potential was real. It details the immediate reaction of those around, police and rescue services. It ends with his time in jail, sentencing, and investigation.
May we RPAS pilots never make the same sad mistakes he made in any capacity? Let us learn from Oliver's sad errors. Observe the weak links.
This story is hypothetical and directed to drone pilots/companies, surveyors, students, and Advanced CL1 pilot candidates about a typical drone pilot who overlooks Transport Canada drone regulations governing safety, when an unthinkable crisis happens. Could you or are you and "Oliver?" Does you company operate like the one that hired him?
The accident results in a mass casualty event when the drone and the large passenger helicopter collide. Oliver is charged criminally for violating safety with an aircraft and sentenced to life in prison after a detailed investigation and court trial. He is charged under the criminal code for operating an aircraft in an unsafe way, which resulted in the mass loss of human life. The company is also investigated and is sued in a class action legal action. The damages quickly exceed the insurance company coverage who's adjuster neglects to cover costs due to criminal pilot violations.
The story is a tale of a young man who rushed his training/online certification, TC knowledge requirements for RPAS pilots due to pressure from his boss and project time constraints. He took the easy track. He also used cannabis heavily which was discovered in the TSB investigation pilot toxicology reports. His haphazard company operation cut corners and did not meet the bare minimum safety standards. Oliver was unaware of how risky the specific drone flight scan area indeed was, and he got caught at the worst possible time.
Circumstances described were based on real situations encountered in the same are by the author. Helicopter pilots also shared that a drone could cause a chain reaction that could and would bring it down.
The purpose of this video is an honest learning tool for businesses and students looking to get into drones, but perhaps want to take shortcuts. It allows the reader to immerse into the life of an drone pilot and investigators who discovered the weak links.
