Der Animationsfilm »Häuser ohne Räder« zeichnet in einem rasanten Trip das Leben des französischen Schriftstellers Matéo Maximoff nach. Er handelt von der Macht des geschriebenen Wortes als Mittel des Überlebens, der Erinnerung und der Bewahrung des kulturellen Erbes.
Schon als Kind war der aus einer Kupferschmiedefamilie stammende Matéo Maximoff ein begeisterter Leser. Das Lesen hatte er sich selbst beigebracht. Er stellte fest, dass ausschließlich Autor/-innen ohne jegliches Wissen über das tatsächliche Leben der Roma über sie schrieben. Die schlüssige Konsequenz für Maximoff: selbst über seine Menschen zu schreiben. Eine wichtige Quelle seiner Werke waren uralte Traditionen, die sich auf übernatürliche Wesen und Kräfte bezogen, und Erzählungen seiner Vorfahren. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in Frankreich wurde das Schreiben für Maximoff zur Überlebensnotwendigkeit. Nach Kriegsende nutzte er seine Fähigkeiten als Schriftsteller und Übersetzer, um auf die Hunderttausenden Opfer des Völkermords an Roma und Sinti aufmerksam zu machen.
»Häuser ohne Räder« ist ist eine Geschichte voller Hoffnungen und Träume. Er pocht auf Anerkennung der Geschichte und der Errungenschaften der Roma gleichermaßen.

Roads Without Caravans
The animated film »Roads Without Caravans« traces the life of French writer Matéo Maximoff in a fast-paced trip. It is about the power of the written word as a means of survival, memory and the preservation of cultural heritage.
Born into a family of coppersmiths, Matéo Maximoff was already an avid reader as a child. He had taught himself to read. He noticed that only authors without any knowledge of Roma life as it really was wrote about them. The logical consequence for Maximoff: to write about his people himself. An important source of his works were ancient traditions relating to supernatural beings and powers, and stories from his ancestors. During the Second World War in France, writing became a survival necessity for Maximoff. After the end of the war, he used his skills as a writer and translator to draw attention to the hundreds of thousands of victims of the genocide of Roma and Sinti.
»Roads Without Caravans« is a story full of hopes and dreams. It insists on the recognition of the history and achievements of the Roma in equal measure.
