Train Cab Ride NL / Frozen Foggy Sunrise / Den Helder - Alkmaar / VIRM IC / February 2023

Hi everyone! Welcome back on board my channel. This time a ride from my birth place Den Helder to Alkmaar in the early morning rush hour. The morning of the recording I started my shift at 4.23am in Amsterdam. Shunted a train from the workshop to Amsterdam, had a break and then drove to Den Helder with this train (in the dark). In Den Helder the sun was almost rising. Time for a video!

0:00 Den Helder
As said we start our journey in Den Helder. On arrival with this train we combined the train with another train set. With a total of 8 carriages we are now running towards Alkmaar. Have a good trip!

After departure from Den Helder we're driving in kinda thick fog (sight will soon get better). Combined with the darkness there's not so much to see. But this was pretty much what I could see myself as well. This is why the driver must know the route fully from the head. We can't make delays because we can't see anything.

Out of the fog the first station dooms up. Between this station and Anna Paulowna the speedometer will be gone. After Anna Paulowna the meter will be back until the end of the ride.

6:34 Sounding Horns Repeatedly
Just after departure from Den Helder Zuid we sound the horn about each 5 seconds because of an unguarded level crossing. The fog makes the train completely invisible for potential users of the cross over. Therefor we must warn them in this case by sounding the horns. As soon as we have passed the crossover we stop sounding the horns.

On departure at this station the speedometer will be back on the screen. :) The route between Den Helder and Schagen is single tracked. So trains must pass each other on the stations. The train schedule is made just perfect so we don't have to wait for one another.

From this point on the route will be double tracked again.

24:16 Contact Train Manager
Train manager contacting me to request if I could announce the next station so she can focus on the need of a passenger.

27:00 Heerhugowaard
Arriving at Heerhugowaard. On the left side the route from Hoorn is joining us.

29:40 Faulty Toilet
The board computer lets me know one of the toilets on board gives an error and has shut itself. I'm sending the train manager toward the toilet to see what's wrong there.

30:57 Bolbrug

32:36 Contact Train Manager + Alkmaar Noord
Train manager requesting to leave the doors of the train closed a little longer at Alkmaar Noord. Just before we come to a full stop the train manager let's me know the doors can be opened.

Train manager requesting if I could announce Alkmaar for her because she's working on the faulty toilet. Message received and a short announcement after that.
