Thaats are used to group and organize ragas.
The thaat system was developed by Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, who is a key figure in Indian classical music.
A thaat. must have seven notes out of the twelve notes [seven natural, four flat (Re, Ga, Dha, Ni), one sharp (Ma)]
The tones must be in ascending sequence: Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni
1)A thaat cannot contain both the natural and altered versions of the same note.
2) A thaat, unlike a raga, does not have separate ascending and descending lines.
3) A thaat has no emotional quality (which ragas, by definition, do have)
4) Thaats are not sung but the ragas produced from the thaats are sung.
ঠাট বা মেল হচ্ছে ভারতীয় শাস্ত্রীয় সঙ্গীতের এক ধরনের সাঙ্গীতিক প্রকাশ যা মূলতঃ রাগ সঙ্গীতকে শ্রেণীবদ্ধ করেছে। ঠাট এক বিশেষ শ্রেণীর স্বর সমগ্র। প্রতিটি ঠাটই ভিন্ন ভিন্ন শুদ্ধ ও বিকৃত সুরের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত। একটি সপ্তকের ১২টি ঘরের মধ্যে ৭টি করে স্বর নিয়ে এক-একটি ঠাট গঠিত হয়েছে।
দশটি ঠাট হল বিলাওয়াল, কল্যাণ, খামাজ, ভৈরব, পূর্বী, মারওয়া, কাফি, আশাবরী ভৈরবী ,টোড়ি|
