Te Kāhui Tika Tangata Human Rights Commission seeks a world where all people live in dignity and enjoy their human rights, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

One of the barriers to achieving this vision includes attempts to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression, sometimes known as conversion practices.

Conversion practices are unlawful in Aotearoa under the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Act 2022. They are also highly unethical and ineffective, breaching multiple human rights in international and domestic law.

Ending conversion practices contributes to advancing Indigenous rights in the present by caring for and protecting takatāpui, Māori Rainbow identities, and traditional Māori cultural values around sexual orientation and gender.
