What is trauma? How does trauma affect us long term? How does trauma affect the brain? How do you heal from trauma? When anyone becomes self aware to identify that they have been through trauma in their life, the need to heal from trauma and 'fix' it can become intense.
Very often childhood trauma, particularly for foster children, will dictate many experiences and relationships long into adult life. The first step in healing trauma is gaining self awareness so that you can recognise your triggers and start taking steps to soothe yourself and therefore rewiring the brain to not continue those destructive patterns you learnt in childhood in order to survive what you were going through.
Our Pscyhotherapist Vicky Blackwell works with lots of children and adolescent's who have experienced significant trauma early in life, many of whom have or are going through the fostering process or adoption. Childhood trauma can show itself in children and young people as 'challenging behaviour', so understanding the background of that child is essential for foster carers in enabling compassion and patience.
Vicky shares what trauma can look like, how it affects the brain and behaviour and how you can heal trauma.
