Born November 16, 1868, is one of the most brilliant students of the Conservatory where he did all his studies in the classes of Lavignae. Young, ardent, friendly, with a superior musical knowledge, Alphonse Catherine is a privileged person who succeeds in everything. He occupies one of the first places among renowned accompanists: it is in this quality, in fact, that he made himself known and appreciated. For twelve years, he has not ceased to be the favorite accompanist at major concerts and the whole plethora of violinists, cellists, vocal artists and wind instrumentalists have been supported by him, for ten years, in the examinations of the Conservatory where he was, moreover, named accompanist 'in title' in 1894.
As a reward for his talent, he received at the distribution of the 1898 prizes, the academic palms from the hands of the Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts. Alphonse Catherine was appointed vocal coach at the opera and it was to him that was entrusted, for his debut, with the care of staging Les Barbares, the last work of Camille Saint-Saens, as well as Siegfried by Richard Wagner .
