മലയാള സിനിമയില് ചുരുങ്ങിയ കാലം കൊണ്ടുതന്നെ സ്വന്തമായ ഇടം കരസ്ഥമാക്കിയ സംവിധായകനാണ് സജിന് ബാബു. കേരളത്തിന്റെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയായ ഐഎഫ്എഫ്കെയുടെ സന്തതിയായി സ്വയം അറിയപ്പെടാന് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന ഈ സംവിധായന് 2014-ല് 'അസ്തമയം വരെ' എന്ന സിനിമയ്ക്ക് ഐഎഫ്എഫ്കെയുടെ പ്രേക്ഷക പുരസ്കാരമായ രജതമയൂരം കരസ്ഥമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഒരു പതിറ്റാണ്ടിനുള്ളില് പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ നാലു ഫീച്ചര് സിനിമകളും- അസ്തമയം വരെ, അയാള് ശശി, ബിരിയാണി, തിയേറ്റര്- സജിന് ബാബുവിലെ സംവിധായകനെ വ്യത്യസ്ത നിലകളില് അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു. ദേശീയ പുരസ്കാരം നേടിയ 'ബിരിയാണി'യാണ് സജിന് ബാബുവിനെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തനാക്കിയത്. കനി കുസൃതിക്ക് ആ സിനിമയിലെ അഭിനയം മികച്ച നടിക്കുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്ഡ് നേടിക്കൊടുത്തു. മോസ്കോ ചലച്ചിത്രമേളയില് ഉള്പ്പെടെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര പുരസ്കാരങ്ങളും ലഭിച്ചു. ബിരിയാണിയെ പോലെ തന്നെ സ്ത്രീ കേന്ദ്രിതമായ പ്രമേയവും പരിചരണവുമാണ് സജിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ ചിത്രമായ 'തിയേറ്റര്- ദി മിത്ത് ഓഫ് റിയാലിറ്റി'യെയും വേറിട്ടു നിര്ത്തുന്നത്. റിമ കല്ലിങ്കലാണ് തീയേറ്ററിലെ മുഖ്യകഥാപാത്രത്തിന് ജീവന് നല്കുന്നത്. Director Sajin Babu has established a distinct identity in Malayalam cinema within a remarkably short span of time. Describing himself as a “child of IFFK” — Kerala’s prestigious International Film Festival — he won the festival’s Audience Choice Award (Silver Crow Pheasant) in 2014 for his film Asthamayam Vare (Until Dusk).
Over the past decade, his four feature films — Asthamayam Vare, Ayal Sasi, Biriyani, and Theatre: The Myth of Reality — have each reflected his versatility and evolving artistic sensibilities as a filmmaker. The National Award-winning Biriyani marked a turning point in his career, earning him widespread recognition. The film also brought Kani Kusruti the Kerala State Award for Best Actress for her compelling performance, in addition to receiving international acclaim, including honors at the Moscow International Film Festival.
