In this video I talk about why I upgraded from the Apple Watch SE 2 to the Garmin Forerunner 165 Music as I prepare for my first ultra marathon, the Two Oceans 56km.
My Apple Watch was already struggling during 4–5 hour marathon runs, so I needed a watch with better battery life, stronger GPS, and tools built specifically for long-distance athletes.
The Garmin 165 Music has been incredibly light on my wrist, and the battery can last more than 7 hours in a race — and even hit the 12 hours needed for Comrades if I ever decide to enter. I’ve taken it out for a 10km and a 10-miler so far, and the experience has been solid.
In this video, I also talk about:
Garmin Connect and how the coaching plans work
Route mapping and sending routes to the watch
Auto-upload to Strava
Why this upgrade makes sense for ultra-marathon training
First impressions and what I’m still learning
